MUSCAT: Oman's historic World Cup dream is on the line as the Red Warriors face Qatar in a crucial Asian playoff qualifier at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Doha, on Wednesday at 7:00 pm (Oman time).
A victory would give Oman a major boost ahead of their decisive clash with the United Arab Emirates on Saturday (October 11) and bring Oman closer to historic qualification.
At the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Oman coach Carlos Queiroz of Portugal set the tone for his squad.
“We face Qatar followed by the UAE, and we're fully prepared with both the motivation and confidence to achieve positive results and qualify. The players are ready and committed to deliver their best performance. We'll play with high spirit, strong competitiveness, and singular focus, regardless of whatever challenges we encounter.”
The former Real Madrid boss added: “All teams have equal opportunity, and our players are stronger and more aware of this stage's importance. We must perform at our highest level and secure positive results in both matches. We recognize each team has strengths and weaknesses, so we're ensuring our players maintain complete focus and minimize errors.”
Earlier on Monday, Queiroz posted an inspiring message on his personal Instagram handle. He said: “Dear Red Warriors, the power of our players is the team, and the power of our team is to be real Omanis. We are more than footballers, because we play with the heart of football and fight with the spirit of true Omanis. We play with pride and honor for one country, one flag, and the people of Oman.”
Veteran defender Ali Al Busaidi reflected the squad's readiness. At the press meet, he said: “Qualification has been our objective since the qualifiers began, and we're now at the crucial stage to achieve it. This match is extremely important, and we've optimally prepared. Pressure is normal in such circumstances, and we're ready to handle it with full concentration and confidence.”
Tomorrow's clash marks the 36th meeting between Oman and Qatar. Oman has won seven, Qatar 19, with seven draws.
Their last encounter in the 2024 Gulf Cup saw Oman prevail 2-1, a morale boost as they chase their World Cup dream.
As the squad finalized training in Doha on Tuesday evening, Queiroz’s rallying call remains the team’s guiding mantra: “We play with the heart of football and the spirit of true Omanis.”
