Oman to make FIH Junior World Cup debut

MUSCAT: Oman are set to script a historic chapter in its sporting journey — making their debut at the FIH Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2025 in India.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Wednesday confirmed Oman’s inclusion after Pakistan’s withdrawal from the event, which will take place in Tamil Nadu, India, from November 28 to December 10, 2025. Oman earned their spot as the next highest-placed team from the Junior Asia Cup 2024.

“This is a landmark moment for Oman hockey,” said Marwan Al Juma, Chairman of the Oman Hockey Association (OHA).

“Our participation at the Junior World Cup reflects the progress we’ve made in recent years and the belief we have in our youth development pathway. Competing on this global stage will be a moment of immense pride for our players and for Oman.”

Al Juma extended gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Oman Olympic Committee, and the FIH for their support in fostering the sport’s growth. “This opportunity will inspire the next generation of Omani athletes to dream bigger and aim higher. Our boys will carry the spirit of Oman with pride, determination, and honour,” he added.

Led by head coach Mohammad Hobais Bait Jandal, the national junior team will join 23 other nations at the tournament — which, for the first time, will feature 24 teams each in both the men’s and women’s events, part of the FIH’s Empowerment and Engagement Strategy promoting inclusivity and global reach.

Calling the qualification “a dream realised,” coach Hobais said the debut marked the beginning of a new era for Omani hockey.

“It’s not just a participation — it’s a statement of how far we’ve come. Our players have shown tremendous dedication and discipline to reach this level. We know the challenges will be tough, but our determination is stronger,” he said.

He added: “Every match in India will be a chance to learn, grow, and represent Oman with pride. This achievement belongs to every young boy and girl who dreams of wearing the national colours. It proves that with belief and hard work, Oman can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best.”

Oman Hockey Association technical director Shakir Munir echoed the sentiment, describing the World Cup debut as “a reward for years of structured development and investment in youth.”

“This milestone underlines the progress of our national programmes and the dedication of our coaching and support teams,” he said. “The experience our young players will gain against top international opposition is invaluable. It will strengthen the foundation for the future of Omani hockey.”

In a press statement on Wednesday, OHA said Oman’s qualification “represents a major step forward in the nation’s hockey development pathway,” reaffirming its commitment to elevate the sport to new heights.
