MUSCAT: Oman national team golfer Ahmed Al Wahaibi delivered a composed and commanding performance to clinch the title at the 30th Assarain Golf Classic, held at Ghala Golf Club on the weekend.
Rising above a packed field of around 135 competitors, Al Wahaibi stamped his authority on one of the Sultanate’s most competitive golfing weekends.
Setting the tone with a superb opening-round 69, Al Wahaibi backed it up with a steady 74 on the final day to finish on 143 gross, enough to secure top honours after two days of intense action.
His ability to manage pressure, particularly on the closing stretch, proved decisive as the chasing pack looked to close the gap.
Speaking after sealing the title, the Omani golfer reflected on the challenge and significance of the win.
“This was a high-quality field and you really had to stay focused across both days,” Al Wahaibi said. “I’m proud of the way I played, especially in the opening round, and it means a lot to come through in a tournament of this standard at Ghala.”
Behind the champion, Suan Long Lai mounted a strong challenge, carding rounds of 76 and 72 to finish runner-up on 148 gross, while Ruwan Jayasinghe and Nasih Al Barwani followed closely on 149, separated only by countback.
Al Wahaibi’s influence extended beyond the main leaderboard. He also finished third in the men’s net category with a total of 135, underlining his all-round consistency across formats. His opening-day effort earned him the Best Gross (Day 1) award, reinforcing his standing as one of Oman’s most dependable competitors.
The tournament concluded with HH Sayyid Azzan bin Kais Al Said, Chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee, distributing the prizes.
