Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman today joined the global community in observing the “International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer” (World Ozone Day), which falls on 16 September every year.
Oman’s observation of the event marks its commitment to protect the environment and underlines its dedication to international obligations under the Montreal Protocol and updates to the same, including the Kigali Amendment.
To this effect, Oman is pressing ahead with the establishment of its first national centre for the recycling of refrigeration gases and air-conditioning gases. The initiative constitutes a significant step towards the sustainable management of such gases, the promotion of the concept of circular economy and the reduction of carbon footprints and greenhouse emissions.
Over the past years, the Environment Authority achieved milestones in cutting down the consumption of ozone-depleting substances. Represented by the National Ozone Unit, the Environment Authority has enhanced the monitoring of the import and handling of these substances through licensing systems. It also developed electronic procedures via "Bayan" system in coordination with the Directorate General of Customs. These measures have contributed to regulating imports, boosting regulatory efficiency and improving data management.
As part of its efforts to develop the sector of refrigeration and air-conditioning, the Environment Authority is engaged in consolidating the system of certification of professional competency (for workers in the sector), to help curb gas leakage and minimize environmental impacts.
The Environment Authority is also implementing plans and programmes for a gradual transition to alternatives and technologies with low environmental impact.
