Sub-zero chill grips Oman as cold wave tightens its hold

MUSCAT: A biting winter chill has tightened its grip across the Sultanate, pushing temperatures in Oman’s highest mountains below freezing and triggering a surge in heater usage as residents brace against one of the coldest spells of the season.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) nationwide weather monitoring network confirmed that Jabal Shams recorded a bone-chilling –4.0°C on Monday, marking the coldest temperature currently observed in the country.

The dramatic drop has transformed daily routines in high-altitude communities, where warmth has become a necessity rather than a comfort. “With temperatures falling into the minus range, heater usage has risen sharply among our guests,” said Akbar Abbas, Resort Manager at The VIEW Oman. “The cold is intense, especially during the night and early morning hours.”

As icy air swept across the mountains, households across Oman responded swiftly — air conditioners and fans were switched off, and car heaters turned to full blast.

Many residents layered up in winter clothing, while others sought electric heaters to battle the persistent chill.

The cold wave has not been confined to the mountains alone. Saiq recorded a low of 6.2°C, while desert and inland regions also felt the winter bite.

Muqshin dipped to 12.1°C, Haima to 12.4°C, and Ibra and Qairoon Hairitti hovered around 13°C, unusually low readings for this time of year.

Other areas, including Bidiyah, Yaaloni, Dhank and Al Qabil, reported temperatures between 13.4°C and 13.5°C, with Marmul close behind at 13.6°C, highlighting the widespread reach of the cold air mass currently influencing regional weather patterns.

Meteorologists say the drop is linked to a strong influx of cold northern air, driving nighttime temperatures sharply lower — particularly in open desert areas and elevated terrain.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents in mountainous and desert regions to take precautions against extreme cold, especially during late-night and early-morning hours. Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility from early-morning fog in some areas.

As winter tightens its grip, Oman wakes to frosty mornings — a stark reminder of nature’s power even in a land better known for its heat.
