Perth: The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the 16th meeting of the Committee on the Allocation of Fishing Quotas of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), held in Perth, Australia. The meeting includes representatives from 29 member-states and 9 regional and international organizations concerned with tuna fisheries management.
The Sultanate of Oman's delegation to the meeting is headed by Eng. Yaqoob Khalfan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Fisheries.
The meeting, which continues until 6 February, reviews a number of important technical topics, most notably discussing the distribution of fishing quotas and considerations for artisanal and small-scale fisheries, and reviewing the general framework for quota allocation, including baseline requirements, special provisions for developing countries, and proposed alternatives.
During its participation, the Omani delegation emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation among member states to reach an agreement satisfactory to all parties that ensures the sustainable use of tuna resources in the Indian Ocean.
The delegation affirmed its commitment to supporting the work and directives of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission in preserving these resources, which guarantees the Sultanate of Oman's right to invest in high-seas tuna fisheries. It also stressed aligning national plans with global approaches in this field, contributing to food security and supporting sustainable development goals.
Oman's presence at this meeting is a continuation of its efforts to highlight its international standing in the fisheries sector and reaffirms its commitment to the principles of transparency and international cooperation to ensure the sustainability of marine resources for future generations.
