Young innovators from Oman to represent Sultanate at Global Robofest finals

Muscat: RoboMed, a specialised healthcare robotics challenge and the first event of its kind in Oman, was held on 7 February, 2026 at Planet International School, Muscat, organised by STEAM LEADERS, Oman in collaboration with Lawrence Technological University (LTU), USA.

In this pioneering competition, Indian School Muscat (ISM) students secured first place in the junior RoboMed category of Robofest Oman 2026, earning the honour of representing the Sultanate at the world finals in the United States.

Competing under the team name “Team Artilink”, four ISM students – Nusrat Mohiuddin (12 years), Mithun Karthikeyan (13 years), Muhammed Narmawala (13 years) and Sriram Ganesh (14 years) – worked under the mentorship of Ubaid Ahmed to design and programme an autonomous medical assistant robot in the RoboMed category.

Their project, titled ‘Artilink’, is a smart healthcare companion system designed to improve patient safety, enable faster emergency response, and support proper medication management. Built with affordability and accessibility in mind, it is suitable for home care, rehabilitation, and assisted living environments.

Artilink combines a wearable health-monitoring bracelet with an assistive robot and an automated medicine dispenser.

The bracelet tracks vital signs such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels, while also detecting falls and sudden abnormal movements, enabling early identification of medical risks and ensuring that emergencies are recognized immediately.

When a fall or emergency is detected, the robot moves toward the patient and activates a loud audible alert to attract nearby caregivers or family members.

At the same time, an SMS alert containing critical information is sent to predefined emergency contacts or medical professionals, ensuring help can be arranged even if no one is nearby.

An integrated medication dispensing unit further supports timely and accurate medicine intake, reducing caregiver burden and promoting safer independent living.

With this victory, team Artilink has qualified to represent Oman at the Robofest World Championships to be held at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan, from 14 to 16 May 2026. Lawrence Technological University is recognised as a leading technological institution in the American Midwest, known for its strong programs in engineering, computer science and design, and for hosting global robotics events such as Robofest.

Participation in the finals will give the students valuable international exposure, opportunities to interact with global peers and experts, and a strong platform for future studies and careers in STEM and healthcare technology.

Robofest and the RoboMed category closely align with Oman Vision 2040, which places strong emphasis on knowledge-based development, innovation, and the use of advanced technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence to improve quality of life.

By designing an autonomous system that directly addresses challenges in elderly and chronic patient care, the Artilink team has demonstrated how school-level innovation can support national priorities in healthcare, digital transformation and human capital development.

The students’ achievement also reflects the growing ecosystem of STEM and robotics education in Oman, supported by schools, local organisers such as STEAM Leaders, and international academic partners. Their success serves as an inspiration for young people across the Sultanate to pursue science, technology and innovation, and positions Oman as an active contributor to global discussions on the future of healthcare and robotics.
