Salalah--- In its 15th round of awards, the Arab Towns Organization awarded Dhofar Governorate first place in the category of “Environmental Health and Safety”. Dhofar Governorate merited the award for carrying out an outstanding programme to combat invasive plants (Parthenium).
The programme was implemented by a national working group comprising members from Dhofar Municipality, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and the Environment Authority. It also saw the participation of teams from Sultan Qaboos University, Dhofar University, Nizwa University and Oman Botanic Garden.
The programme was implemented in partnership with governmental, academic and environmental institutions, in addition to community awareness groups and field study researchers.
