
Washington: Student teams from the Sultanate of Oman participating in the International Science and Engineering Fair 2026 achieved outstanding scientific accomplishments, reflecting the capabilities of Omani students and their excellence in research and innovation at the global level, while reinforcing the distinguished presence of the Ministry of Education in international scientific forums.
Students Ward bint Badr Al-Balushi and Rimas bint Qais Al-Balushi from Al-Amal School (10-12), affiliated with the Directorate General of Education in South Al Batinah Governorate, secured fourth place globally in the field of environmental engineering for their invention titled “A passive system based on ophiolites using plasmonic technology and photocatalytic treatment of water associated with oil production.”
The project offers innovative solutions to address environmental challenges related to the oil sector through advanced water treatment technologies.
In another achievement, students Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Zarouni and Abdul Rahman bin Khalid Al-Balushi from Saad Bin Abi Waqas School (9-12), affiliated with the Directorate General of Education in North Al Batinah Governorate, received a special award and student membership from the American Psychological Association in the field of social and behavioral sciences.
The recognition came for their invention titled “An artificial intelligence-based system for analysing and supporting student interaction within the classroom.”
The exhibition brings together leading innovators and researchers from around the world to compete across 22 scientific disciplines, including engineering, computer science and social sciences, reflecting the latest scientific and technological developments.
The event serves as a global platform for showcasing student research and innovations and promoting a culture of scientific research and creativity. It also provides students with opportunities to exchange scientific expertise and experiences with peers from various countries, broadening horizons for learning and cultural exchange.
These achievements represent an extension of the Ministry of Education’s efforts to support scientific innovation and enable students to participate in international competitions, strengthening Oman’s presence in global scientific forums and reaffirming the ability of Omani students to compete and excel internationally.
The participation also contributes to developing students’ skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while preparing a generation equipped with future-ready tools capable of employing knowledge to devise innovative solutions to contemporary challenges.
The exhibition further enhances students’ critical thinking, teamwork, research and analytical skills, in addition to promoting technological awareness and fostering a culture of innovation and creativity.
