Indian expats have to shell out more money for new passport as fees hiked from July 1

New Delhi: The Indian Government has revised passport and travel document fees, with the new rates coming into effect from July 1, 2026, following a notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The revised fee structure was notified through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, issued on June 20 under the provisions of the Passports Act, 1967. The amendment replaces Schedule IV of the Passports Rules, 1980, which governs fees for passport and travel document services.

Under the revised rates, applicants aged 15 years and above seeking a fresh passport or passport reissue will pay ₹2,500 for a 36-page booklet under the normal scheme, up from ₹1,500. The Tatkal fee for the same category has been fixed at ₹5,000.

For a 60-page passport booklet, the normal fee has been increased to ₹3,500, while Tatkal applications will cost ₹6,000.

The government has also revised charges for replacement of lost or damaged passports. A replacement 36-page passport will cost ₹5,000 under the normal scheme and ₹7,500 under Tatkal. For a 60-page replacement passport, applicants will have to pay ₹6,000 under the normal category, with higher Tatkal charges applicable.

The fee revision also covers passport reissues, police clearance certificates, and certain travel documents for applicants both in India and abroad.

The MEA said the revised rates will apply to all applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026. The move marks the first major revision in passport fees in several years and is expected to impact millions of applicants seeking fresh passports, renewals, and related travel services.
