Kinshasa-- The Ebola virus has claimed at least 1,700 lives in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking the fastest-spreading outbreak of the disease on record.
The latest government data from Congo indicates that a total of 3,802 cases and 1,707 deaths have been recorded as of today.
Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), stated during his second visit to the town of Bunia, near the epicenter of the outbreak, that it remains unclear when the epidemic will reach its peak.
He further noted that approximately 80 percent of new infections have not stemmed from contact tracing of known cases, but rather from ongoing community transmission among the Congolese population.
