MSX extends gains, rising for the second consecutive week

Muscat: The main index of the Muscat Stock Exchange strengthened its gains during the week, rising for the second week in a row, benefiting from the rise of many leading stocks in various sectors listed on the exchange.

The index rose 90 points after rising 160 points the previous week, concluding weekly trading at 7,367 points, supported by shares of Al Anqa Energy, OQ Gas Networks, Al Anwar Investments, Voltamp Energy, Omantel, Bank Muscat, Bank Sohar International, Bank Nizwa, and many other shares in the sectors included in the main index sample.

The week saw the prices of 43 securities rise, which pushed the stock exchange index upwards, while the prices of 25 securities remained unchanged and 27 securities recorded a decline. The services sector index recorded the highest rise among the sector indices, rising by 2.1 percent or the equivalent of 61 points and closing at 2,951 points.

The financial sector index rose by 42 points, and the Sharia index rose by about 8 points, while the industrial sector index recorded a decline of 24 points with the decline of shares of OQ Basic Industries, Al Maha Ceramics, Al Anwar Ceramic Tiles, Salalah Mills and a number of other industrial companies.

The Muscat Stock Exchange recorded gains in its market capitalistion estimated at OMR246.5 million, rising to OMR37.82 billion at the close of trading. The Muscat Stock Exchange also recorded a rise of 3.3 percent in trading value also, which increased to OMR264.5 million compared to OMR255.9 million in the week before, and the number of transactions executed exceeded 44,000.

The week saw an increase in the value of trading in bank stocks, with Bank Muscat accounting for 19.3 percent of the total trading value with trades amounting to OMR51.3 million, Bank Sohar International accounting for 14.7 percent of the total trading value with trades exceeding OMR39 million, OQ Exploration and Production (OQEP) in third place with trades amounting to OMR32.8 million, OQ Basic Industries in fourth place with trades worth OMR29.3 million, and Omantel in fifth place with trades exceeding OMR28 million, representing 10.6 percent of the total trading value.

Al Batinah Development and Investment shares led the gainers, rising by 25 percent and closing at 75 baisa. Al Anqa Energy shares rose to 270 baisa, recording a rise of 7.5 percent. OQ Gas Networks shares rose by 6 percent and closed at 212 baisa. National Finance shares rose to 224 baisa, increasing by 5.6 percent. Oman Qatar Insurance shares rose by 5.2 percent and closed at 180 baisa.

National Aluminum Products shares led the decliners, falling by 50 percent to close at 149 baisa. Building Materials Industries shares fell by 13.3 percent to close at 65 baisa. National Detergents shares dropped by 10 percent to close at 621 baisa. Salalah Mills shares declined by 9.9 percent to close at 604 baisa, and Muscat Gases shares fell by 7.9 percent to close at 139 baisa.

In company news, the Muscat Stock Exchange during the week listed the shares of Bank Sohar International’s capital increase, which the bank offered to exercise its right of preference, through which it aimed to increase its capital from OMR702.5 million to OMR849.6 million. The stock closed at the end of the week’s trading at 182 baisa, up by 4 baisa during the week.

Asyad Shipping announced the delivery of the tanker ‘Manah’, the first of two medium-class chemical tankers built in a shipyard in China. The company expects to receive the second tanker, named ‘Mirbat’, next month. The company stated that the two tankers will be operated under a 3-year charter agreement with a Tier 1 customer. The company's stock settled at its previous level of 235 baisa at the end of last week's trading, despite rising to 244 baisa during the sessions. 4,660 transactions were executed with a value of OM10.1 million.
