Oman introduces new water flow measurement standards to enhance resource management

Muscat: Oman has introduced three standards aimed at enhancing measurement accuracy and improving the efficiency of water resource management, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Sultanate’s standardisation system and keep pace with technical and technological developments.

The standards cover key types of water flow measurement equipment and are designed to support greater accuracy, reliability and consistency in measuring water flows.
The three Omani Standards are:
- OS 1662 – Omani Standard for Electromagnetic Flow Meters, covering electromagnetic technology used to measure water flow.
- OS 1663 – Omani Standard for Mechanical Water Flow Meters, establishing requirements for mechanical meters used in water measurement.
- OS 1664 – Omani Standard for Ultrasonic Flow Meters, addressing ultrasonic technology for accurate flow measurement.
The standards are expected to contribute to higher measurement accuracy and reliability, helping improve the monitoring and management of water resources.
They are also intended to enhance efficiency in water resource management by promoting consistent measurement practices and supporting the use of modern flow-metering technologies.
According to the information presented by Oman’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, the standards further contribute to alignment with international standards and best practices, reinforcing efforts to develop Oman’s technical and regulatory infrastructure.
The adoption of standards covering electromagnetic, mechanical and ultrasonic flow meters reflects the growing importance of accurate water measurement in supporting sustainable and efficient management of water resources.
