
MUSCAT: In one of the most remarkable sporting achievements in Oman's recent history, the national team golfers struck rich at the Pan-Arab Golf Championship (age group) 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, which concluded on Saturday night.
Talented Ahmed Al Wahaibi led from the front as he bagged the individual gold in the U21 category and then was joined by Adam Al Barwani to bring home the U21 team gold. Adding to the golden sparkle was the performance of the young and promising Yousuf Al Rumhy, who claimed a silver in the U13 category.
The rich haul of three medals came at the championship that attracted leading golfers from the Arab world from October 6-10.
More than 120 men and women players representing 13 Arab countries, namely Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon, competed at the Madinaty and Mirage City Golf Course.
The closing ceremony was presided over by the Arab Golf Federation vice-president, Adel Al Fayyad, and attended by Oman Golf Association (OGA) vice-president Faiz Mohammed Riaz and OGA secretary Ahmed Al Jhdhamy.
Oman's impressive display was lauded by Basil Al Rawas, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, who sent a cable of greetings to Faiz Mohammed on the team's historic achievement. This is for the first time that the national golf team won two gold and a silver at the championship.
The national team that participated in the championship included Ahmed Al Wahaibi, Adam Al Barwani, Yousuf Al Rumhy, Ibrahim Riyaz, Taimur Al Busaidi, Mohammed Al Junaidi, and Elias Al Junaidi.
Speaking to Times of Oman, OGA's Faiz Mohammed said: "This is a historic day in the annals of Oman golf. Three medals including two gold medals is an unforgettable achievement."
He added: "This is a new chapter for Oman's golf and we would like to congratulate our heroes and wish them all success ahead."
"Our players have raised the Oman flag with pride and shown the Arab world that Oman is a rising golf nation," the senior OGA official said.
Faiz Mohammed added: "These victories are more than sporting achievements. They are the result of determination, sacrifice, discipline, and an unbreakable belief in what we can achieve as a nation. My congratulations and appreciation also go to our coaches, families, and everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this achievement possible. Today, we celebrate history. Tomorrow, we aim even higher."
Faiz Mohammed, who has been one of the key drivers in bringing changes at the Oman Golf Association, said: "This is only the beginning of a new era for Oman golf. Our ambition has no limits, and our journey towards greater international success has only just begun. We came with a dream here in Cairo and we competed with pride. We return home with golden history."
For his part, OGA secretary and national teams' director Al Jhdhamy, said the results will "enhance the confidence in our players and also gives motivation to other golfers."
He added: “We aspire to build on this achievement by continuing to pay attention to age groups, providing training and competitive participation opportunities, and linking the acquired experiences to the needs of each golfer. Our goal is for these talents to develop gradually and to possess the qualities that qualify them to maintain their competitive presence and achieve better results in future competitions.”
