Ibra: The animal sector in the Governorate of North Al Sharqiyah is witnessing notable growth in production volume, veterinary services, and associated investment opportunities, contributing to the enhancement of local production and the development of the agricultural economy, both within the governorate specifically and across the Sultanate of Oman in general.
Dr. Abdulaziz Ali Al Mashaykhi, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, told Oman News Agency that the number of new investment projects in the governorate has reached seven, with an estimated total value of approximately OMR33 million. These projects include ventures in animal production, horse breeding, and poultry and egg production, alongside existing projects in goat, cattle, and camel farming, as well as dairy production.
With regard to investment promotion, Dr. Abdulaziz pointed out that 14 investment opportunities have been listed on the "Tatweer" platform in the field of horse breeding stables across several wilayats of the governorate. Furthermore, through the "Suggest Your Project" portal, proposals for investment projects have been submitted, most notably Dutch rabbit meat production, ostrich farming, and fertilised egg production. He noted that contracts for some of these projects have already been signed.
He added that work is currently underway to provide investment plots for livestock projects and fodder cultivation. Dr. Abdulaziz said that recorded data indicates total livestock in the governorate reached approximately 435,000 head in 2025. Veterinary services are provided to breeders through seven government veterinary clinics and 43 private veterinary clinics and pharmacies, he added.
He stated that the number of animals treated during 2025 reached approximately 119,845 head, and that 818,876 vaccine doses were administered, benefiting 6,660 breeders as part of animal disease prevention programs. He noted that these programmes recorded a growth of 24 percent compared to 2024.
He also pointed to supporting programmes such as the goat and sheep breed improvement programme, under which 23 improved males were distributed to breeders. The total number of animal farm complex plots (known locally as Izub) in the governorate stands at approximately 1,622 plots, and 46 pastoral sites have been approved to support grazing activities and regulate the use of natural rangelands.
Dr. Abdulaziz stated that the poultry production reaches approximately 3.671 million birds annually, in addition to the production of around 126 million eggs per year, while dairy production stands at approximately 255,600 cubic meters annually.
He added that the number of poultry production projects in the governorate stands at 44, ranging from large to medium and small-scale operations. There are 24 poultry slaughterhouses, of which 21 are actively operational. The self-sufficiency rate for poultry meat is estimated at around 40 percent, while the self-sufficiency rate for table eggs reaches approximately 218 percent, reflecting a surplus in egg production in North A’Sharqiyah Governorate.
