UNICEF: 23 children killed, 25 injured in Sudan's Kordofan as conflict intensifies

New York: At least 23 children were killed and 25 injured in North Kordofan, western Sudan, since fighting intensified around El Obeid over the past two months, UNICEF has confirmed.

The UN agency said four children were recently killed in the Barbar area south of El Obeid, bringing the total killed or injured this month to at least eight.

"Four more children have lost their lives in a conflict that continues to expose children and their families to grave danger," UNICEF said. "Behind every number is a child whose life has been cut short, a family whose future has been forever altered. Children remain victims of this conflict, and their safety, rights and the services they depend on must be protected."

At least 330 children have been killed or injured in the first six months of this year, the statement said, warning that ongoing violence, repeated displacement and the destruction of civilian infrastructure continue to endanger children's lives, safety and future.
